Natalia was curled up on the couch, shivering. She remembered to pay the bill. The building was just so old. The superintendent rarely did improvements. So it was up to the tenants to do thing theirselves. Not Natalia. She didn't know about things like that. Now sleeping with someone to get her heat fixed was something else. It was something she could do.

Natalia stood up with the blanket wrapped around her body, and walked to the kitchen. Her apartment was designed with everything open. There were no doors to separate the living area from the kitchen, and the kitchen from the living area. Yes, her bedroom had a door on it. As well as the bathroom, and the small hall closet. It wasn't extravagant, but she did well with what she had.

Vic's walk through the 'Kitchen' was long and tiring, lasting only because of that coffee he had earlier. When he finally saw the old building, he couldn't help but smile. No one would've seen this smile, since it was more of a mental thought than physical action. Instead of going in through the front, he went to the back. He calculated exactly where the room was by looking up two stories at the edge of the building. That was their apartment, allowing a perfect view of the back-streets. The fire escape was directly above a dumpster, previously moved the day Vic and his sister moved in. Vic closed the lid down and climbed up, one leg at a time. He then had to hop up to grab a hold of the broken ladder, where he pulled his weight until his feet could catch the bottom notch. From there, he went up another level until he was at the bedroom window. That wasn't too bad.

Vic remembered the lock was broken, so had no trouble lifting the window and letting himself in. He closed the window behind him, then casually walked into the living area where he saw Natalia wrapped up in that blanket. "Always was cold in here," he said in a nonchalant tone. Vic was trying to make peace between them, hoping she wasn't still mad about yesterday.

Natalia was exiting the kitchen with the cup of tea when he emerged from the back. She squealed, dropped her glass, and cursed. Why couldn't he use the door like normal people? Probably because he wasn't normal himself. A couple of his screws had become unbolted in the past. Either way he was crazy. Not, insane crazy. Where he couldn't function with other people. But crazy to the point where something in his brain was missing.

She paused and tried to refrain from looking at him. Sometimes it was the little things he did that made her mad. Like just now, when he scared her. He probably didn't have any intention in doing it. But it still was done. Natalia quietly cleaned up the contents of her glass. She scooped the broken pieces into a makeshift dust pan and emptied that into a garbage can.

"You really shouldn't do that."

"You're right. I didn't mean to startle you," he said apologetically. Vic removed his coat as he made his way over to the couch, where he layed it across the armrest at the end. He took that very seat next to it, sat back and tried to relax his body. This was the first time he had been able to actually relax in a while, now. Home was the only place he felt safe, and that was only because of his baby sister's presence. Without her, his home would just be an enclosed space in a warzone. "Natalia, do we have anything to eat?" Vic was so tired, it almost helped out with suppressing that hunger just as much as the nicotine did. Speaking of which, he was due for a cigarette. He searched his pockets for that pack of his, but found it difficult to find with his coat folded up. He had so many damn compartments, it was too easy to lose small items like that.

"Theirs some leftover noodles from the other night. You want to try that?"

Natalia replied. From the looks of things, he was probably too hungry to refuse this offer. So instead of waiting for an answer she made a jumpstart on warming up the food. It was covered in a bowl on the lowest shelf in the refrigator. Oh yes. There was a refrigator as well as other kitchen 'essentials'. Just because the apartment building was in bad shape didn't mean she lived poorly.

The food warmed up in seconds. With help from the microwave, of course. Natalia would have to add getting a new microwave to her list of things-to-do. As well as stocking up on groceries. Maybe she'd be able to pass that burden over to Victor. He was out more then she was. Natalie enjoyed being a 'home body'. She plucked a fork from the utensil drawer, and sat it down along with his bowl.

"You want anything else?"

Vic watched her as she moved from position to position, fixing him a simple meal to hold him over. She was the best thing in his life. He would have to hold off on that cigarette. Too hungry to turn down raw steak, he gladly accepted the bowl from Natalia. He gripped the fork for only a moment, then set the empty bowl down with the fork in it. That sound of metal utensils hitting a ceramic eating dish was universal for 'finished'. He didn't say a word, but instead finished chewing the little bit of noodles in his mouth. The rest of it was simply swallowed. He learned that from his father. Swallowing some foods whole, or with little chewing, would help make it last, suppressing your hunger longer than normal. As far that cigarette, it was already sitting between his lips by now. He continued running his coat pockets until he found those matches. One was removed and stricken against the side of the box. The smell of sulfur flooded his nostrils, slightly irritating his nose hairs. He was used to this, so it wasn't too serious to him. The flame met with the end of the cigarette, and he was relaxed within a few drags of it. "Where did you get money for a cab," he questioned, assuming that was how she got back home before him. "I thought you didn't have any."

My, my. He got done pretty fast. Natalia saw him eat like this many of times. But each time was more fascinating than the last. Natalia told him "many of times" to chew his food. He'd end up choking himself the way he was going. There was no telling that man, though. Whomever he chose to be his wife one day, would be an unlucky woman in deed.

Natalia picked up the bowl, and dropped it in the sink with the rest of the dishes. Mental note: Remember to wash the dishes before they piled up. She could just knock them out now. But their was still some unfinished business between her and her brother. She did let some water run in the bowl. It was something she learned from her mother. If you let some water run in the dish the food wouldn't stick. But if you allowed it to sit in the sink, it'd be harder to wash later. Natalia wiped her hands on a dish towel, and then took the empty spot beside her brother. Should she lie? Or tell him the truth?

"It was money from a rainy day stash. I'm not poor, Victor."

"Understood," he said, simply ignoring his suspicion. It wasn't the fact that she had money and he didn't know about it. Vic was more worried about how she acquired the cash. Vic didn't want her out there earning dirty money. That was the very last thing he wanted. "I'm about to go out and pick up a newspaper. Maybe a pistol," he said, closing his eyes and taking another drag from that cigarette. Vic held the smoke in for a moment, before allowing it to escape his lungs and pour out through each nostril. He opened his concern-filled eyes and stared into hers. "Did you want me to get you anything?"

"No, I'm fine."

She would've suggested him getting some groceries. But she could use that as an excuse to go out. Natalia was starting to run low on her "rainy day" money. She had been dipping in it over the past couple of days. Work was slow. For both her and Victor. She could always work at the club down the street. But Victor would probably condone that. He needed to understand that she was grown as well. Natalia was fully capable of making her own decisions. Whether they're good or bad.

"But when you come back, could you check on that heat? I would appreciate it."

Natalia flashed him one of her more innocent smiles. She used that same smile many times to get her way. It worked more times then it failed.

Vic sat there for a minute and listened to her words, feeling a bit unsure about not bringing her anything back. He made a note to get her something, even if it wasn't much. "Understood, Natalia." Vic took another couple of drags off his cigarette, then searched for his ash-tray. It was in the kitchen. He stood up with the finished cigarette in his mouth, grabbed his coat, and put it on so it fit comfortably. Removing the cigarette butt from his mouth, he bent down and placed a slightly roughed hand against her lower jaw, with her ear resting between his thumb and index finger. With his fingers at the back of her neck, he pulled her forward and met her half way, planting a kiss on her forehead. "I'll be back as soon as possible, Natalia."

Vic released his gentle grip and placed the cigarette butt between his lips once more. He rotated on the heel of his boot and headed for the bedroom, where he opened the window and climbed out onto the fire escape. The cigarette was removed from his lips and tossed to the side. Here he went again. Out looking for someone to hire him. He was so skilled, but no one seemed to want to give the man an opportunity. It would come sooner or later. With positive thoughts in his head, he jogged down the rusty steps of the fire escape, then leaped over the bottom railing to land gracefully, but noisily, on top of the dumpster. He immediately followed up with yet another leap from there to the ground, where he walked it off as if he was there the whole time.

Did she happen to mention that she had a slight addiction to prescription pills? She started taking them when she became a prostitute. All of that was behind her now. It happened ages ago, and she wanted to keep it that way. Did Victor know about that part of her life? Probably not. If he did, he didn't mention anything to her about it. During that time of her life she had hit rock bottom. Those prescription pills were her only friend.

Natalia was knocking over bottles in the bathroom cabinet. Nothing! Nothing? Aspirin was the only thing available. It didn't give her the "euphoria" that a prescription pill could. It was going to be a long night. Natalia wrapped herself back up in her blanket, and cut off the bathroom light. She padded down the hallway and into the bedroom. Victor left the window open, and it didn't help in heating the apartment. She closed the window and crawled into bed. Minutes passed and she was already drifting off to sleep.

Natalia slowly blinked open her eyes, and sat up. It wasn't cold like it usually was. Maybe Victor had came in and worked on fixing the heat? Even if he didn't, it didn't matter. Was Victor home? She had never mentioned it, but she liked having him home. He was really a sweetheart. Despite what he did for an occupation.

She stretched, climbed out of bed, and padded out of the room and down the hallway.

"Victor? Victor!"

No where in sight. She wrinkled up her face, and walked back down the hallway to the bathroom. Her clothes were discarded at the door, and she closed that door before getting down to business.

Thirty minutes, and a shower later, Natalia was redressing. She didn't over do it. A simple pair of black pants and shirt would do. She was slipping inside of her jacket when she made the walk to the door. Yes, the front door was made to use. Her brother failed to do it, because something was wrong with him. Natalia looked at the apartment one last time and walked out. The door was locked, and she stepped off down the hallway.
